That being said, I enjoyed my trip down there. Got to do a bit of sightseeing, including a tour of Parliament House.
But of course the main reason for my visit was for the Aurealis Awards, which honour the finest in Australian speculative fiction. I've been lucky enough to attend most of the last six awards nights, and I have loved every single one. It's fantastic meeting so many people with the same love of science fiction and fantasy.
Overall it was a great experience. Some brilliant writers were in attendance. Sean Williams and Simon Brown were in fine form as hosts, as were all the presenters. It was genuinely amazing seeing the look of pure shock and awe of most of the winners as they accepted their awards.
Did I mention there was free alcohol before the ceremony started?
If you have a free weekend next March/April and can get to Canberra, then I definitely recommend getting to the awards next year.
You never know, Axinstone or Legendary could be up for an award...
